Methylparaben

Preservative

What is Methylparaben, and why is it used?

One of the parabens: long-used preservatives that prevent microbial growth in cosmetics.

Known concern

Some parabens show weak estrogen-like activity in laboratory studies — many times weaker than the body's own estrogen.

Regulatory

The EU's scientific committee (SCCS) considered methyl- and ethylparaben safe up to permitted limits; limits for propyl- and butylparaben were lowered and some other parabens banned.

Why it matters

Unpreserved water-based products can grow harmful microbes. Removing a preservative means replacing it with another.
