Shampoo

Formulation

What's in shampoo, and how does it work?

Mostly water, plus surfactants that lift oil, conditioners that smooth, preservatives that keep it safe, and pH adjusters.

Water

Usually the main ingredient. Because it contains water, the product needs preservation against microbes.

Surfactants

Molecules with a water-loving head and oil-loving tail. They surround sebum and dirt so water can rinse it away.

Conditioning

Silicones and cationic polymers coat the hair shaft, reducing friction and static.

Preservatives

Prevent bacteria and mold growing in the bottle after you open it.

pH adjusters & fragrance

Citric acid fine-tunes pH; fragrance is a mix that may include allergens for some people.
