Sucralose

Sweetener · E955

What is Sucralose, and why is it used?

About 600 times sweeter than sugar, made from sucrose. Mostly passes through the body unabsorbed.

How it works

Chlorine atoms replace three hydroxyl groups on sugar, so taste receptors detect it but enzymes don't break it down.

Evidence

Approved by FDA and EFSA. Research continues on effects on gut microbes and heated use; findings so far are mixed.
